Evolution of a Wallhanging

With my Mother & Child piece finished, it's been time to get the next handwork project ready for handstitching.

Last year or so I machine embroidered some sets of ornaments.  At the time I was enamored with appliquing frames around motifs.  I didn't get the proposed wallhanging done before my attentions were pulled elsewhere.  With this being the year to get some UFOs done, the Christmas blocks were recently resurrected.

One of the problem with UFOs is that often I have learned what I needed to learn & the interest in completing the project has long passed.  Later I look at the unfinished work and feel it is a shame to let it go.  But returning to a previous mindset is not always easy.

In my usual fashion, when presented with UFOs, I try to put them altogether.  Sometimes it works.  Sometimes it doesn't work.

I host an on-line embroidery group called Tuesday Stitchers.  We give each other support aimed at embroidery issues and for this year, to finish UFOs.  One of the gals in the group is a super Photoshop user and she mocked up some ideas for me.  Once I saw the direction someone else perceived I was taking (by what I was saying I was doing and wanting) it was interesting to see how this wallhanging (45" x 60") evolved.

I won't put you through every transformation.  If you are interested in the full discussion, read it beginning here.

These blocks will become a nice table runner for my dining room!

I was hoping for a 'nordic/victorian' idea; 2 totally opposing ideas!

I later decided the motifs would be better in a traditional CQ.  My fellow stitchers helped me see the light!

Then we started massaging the doily layout --

The plan will be to add tone-on-tone low contrast hand embroidery on the background seams; mainly for texture.

Of the strictly 'snowflake' layouts (the blocks are now being repurposed for other projects), which one do you prefer?

  1. The bottom one is great fun and very snowlike. Imagine, snowing in Montgomery, Texas!

  3. I'm having trouble distinguishing between photo 2 and photo 3. I like those 2 the best because the snowflakes are distributed more evenly.

  4. I like 'em all. Love the RED!!!

  5. Of the snowflake photos I would like the last one best if the empty red area at the bottom had snowflakes on too. Otherwise, I prefer the randomness of the snowflakes in the 2nd photo.

  7. I like the last one best, it looks as though the snowflakes are still falling.

  8. Well, I vote for 2 or 3. They seem the best balanced from this end. I do know however that you reserve the right to change any of it!
