Beautiful Garden--Side Borders Pieced

Don't ask me how but I managed to get the side borders pieced this weekend.  I'm not sure if I will add top and bottom borders.  If I do, I doubt I will add many more birds.  They turn out to be pretty big.  Or, maybe I should just buy the smaller sized files and try some small birds.  Pretty undecided on that issue.

Next step is to go in and add the trims.  I'm not very good stitching them on when I am making the block because I like to see the overall look first.  I plan to use a lot of red for the trims.  Actually, I have wanted to make my own trims by embroidering little motifs on fabrics so this is the experimental quilt for that idea.  I also plan to use some gingham for a 'cross stitch' grid.  Going for a country look here.

I'll be seriously blurring the lines between the patches, doing some robbing peter to pay paul ideas with color placement & trying to meld all these motifs together.  Wish me luck! *wink*
My plan is not to stress about this CQ.  It's for my own pleasure.  (Rinse and repeat)

  1. It's amazing when you see all of the pieces together. Although I loved all of the blocks as you showed them in progress, I wasn't really sure how it was going to work out. This will really be an heirloom piece when it is finished.

    1. I was a little disappointed the birds took up so much space & that I wasn't able to get much difference in the patch placement on such a long strip. But, I am learning to move forward and that there will be others I can try other techniques on. Although this one may take the rest of my life to hand embroider!

  2. Wow, thats alot accomplished this weekend !
You're placement has your lines blurred real well right now... hard for me to see your block lines. Will love to see how this goes being a "for pleasure" piece ...those are always the best projects. Seriendipitous (sp) creativity always reveals itself.

    1. I'm just brainwashing myself on the "for pleasure" part. If I say "I'm going to enter this in a show", I get all tense and can't make a clear decision. And, I do have a spot in my living room where one quilt hangs that needs something new and fresh.

  3. It's the colors and all the little bits of Debra in there that make it for me:) Whatever you add on top will be super I am sure:)

    1. I think that is why it feels like a personal CQ vs. a show CQ. Just little bits of me and my personal life--I haven't even started the layer of momentos yet. I think this about layer 5.

  5. I like the way the center blue pieces flow so well together. Really nice. Are you putting a border between the blue and the side borders?
I'll expect to see some beautiful and unique trims now that you'll be making your own! wow. You amaze me with all you accomplish.

    1. No border between the blue and the orange. The orange is the border but it will sort of be a part of it too--I'm going to have the colors flow back and forth. That's the plan anyway!

  7. I love it all. So cheerful. I agree with Rian - would never in a million years thought of putting those colors together, but they are beautiful.

  8. The prices in the border flow together beautifully! Very nice. How big is this? I know you probably have said but on iPad I can't go back easily.
